Getting Started: For Begginers!
I have zero martial arts experience. Is that okay? Absolutely! Most of our members start with no experience at all. Our classes are designed to be beginner-friendly, and our instructors are experts at teaching the fundamentals from the ground up.
Do I need to be in shape to start? This is one of the most common myths! You don't get in shape to start training; you train to get in shape. Our classes will improve your cardio, strength, and flexibility at your own pace.
What should I wear to my first class? For your trial class, comfortable athletic clothing like a t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants is perfect. Avoid anything with zippers, buttons, or pockets that could snag. We train barefoot on the mats. Please remove any jewelry, piercings, etc.
Which class should I take first? You are welcome to start in any class on our schedule! Every session, whether it's BJJ or Striking, is beginner-friendly and our community is great at helping new people learn. If you're looking for the ideal first step for a specific art, we recommend: To learn grappling: Try our BJJ Fundamentals class. To learn striking: Jump into any of the boxing or kickboxing classes! These classes are built from the ground up for those with no prior experience, making them the perfect place to start your journey.
About Our Classes & Training
What are the age ranges for your classes? We offer classes for both youth and adults. Here’s a breakdown of our age guidelines: Youth BJJ (Ages 5+) Our Youth BJJ program starts at 5 years old. However, we know every child is different. The most important factors are a child's ability to focus and safely participate in a group setting. We welcome everyone to try a free class, and our coaches will be happy to discuss your child's readiness with you afterward. Adult Classes (Ages 15+) Our adult classes are generally for students aged 15 and older, though maturity levels can vary. A Special Note on Striking: For safety reasons, we require teenagers in our adult striking classes to attend with a dedicated partner (like a parent or friend) who can hold pads for them. This ensures they can participate fully and safely in all drills.
What does a typical class look like? Most classes follow a similar structure: a 10-15 minute warm-up, 30-40 minutes of technique instruction and drilling with a partner, and finishing with live training (sparring/rolling) or partner drills.
What equipment do I need? For your trial class, you just need to wear comfortable athletic clothing. Once you become a member, you will need specific gear depending on the classes you take: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): For Gi Classes: A BJJ Gi (kimono) is required. We also strongly recommend wearing compression wear, like a rashguard and/or spats (compression pants), underneath for comfort and hygiene. For No-Gi Classes: You will need a rashguard and athletic shorts or spats. Striking: You will need boxing gloves, shin guards for kickboxing, and a mouthguard to participate safely in partner drills. Don't worry about buying everything at once. Our instructors can help you with recommendations and sizing to make sure you get the right gear.
Health, Safety, and Hygiene
Cleanliness/Grooming Etiquette ? We maintain a strict hygiene policy for the health of our community. This includes: Keeping fingernails and toenails trimmed. Wearing clean gear (gi/rashguard/shorts) to every class. Using footwear when off the mats. Most importantly: Students with any contagious skin condition (e.g., ringworm, staph) are not permitted to train until it is fully resolved. Please inform an instructor privately if you have any concerns.
What if I have a pre-existing injury or medical condition? Please speak with an instructor before your first class. We can often modify techniques and training to accommodate injuries or conditions, but it's essential we are aware of them to ensure your safety.
